Two of Brussels' metro lines were long at a standstill on Wednesday when the police suspected that perpetrators from an early morning shooting had taken refuge in the tunnels between stations.
The traffic was reopened later without any arrests being made. No one is reported to have been injured in the shooting. The affected area has in recent years been plagued by several violent crimes linked to drug trafficking and other criminality.
It's pretty obvious what this is about. This violence is a cancer for our neighborhoods, says Fabrice Cumps, mayor of the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht to the newspaper Le Soir.
