An explosion on a train track in Poland is suspected of being sabotage on a whole new level. Two Ukrainians working for Russia are suspected of two cases of railway sabotage, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced. The NATO country is receiving support from several allies, including Sweden.

Everything indicates that Russian intelligence services were behind the explosion on a railway track in eastern Poland, Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for Polish Security Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, told the PAP news agency.

During a speech in parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that two Ukrainians who worked for Moscow are suspected of two cases of railway sabotage in Poland.

They "have been operating and cooperating with (Russian) services for a long time," says Tusk, citing information from prosecutors and investigative authorities.

Tusk said on Monday that the intention appeared to have been to blow up a train between the capital Warsaw and the city of Lublin – a route where Poland transports aid and weapons to Ukraine, but where there is mainly regular traffic with civilian passengers.

The government has held a meeting with the military and security services regarding the incident. The army has been sent to check the security of other infrastructure in the eastern part of the country.

“Offered help”

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) writes on social media that he spoke on the phone with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday regarding the incident.

"Offered Sweden's help if there is anything we can do. Friends stick together," the post reads.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has announced that the alliance is in close contact with Poland and is awaiting answers from the ongoing investigations.

Polish prosecutors are investigating the matter as a suspected terrorist-related sabotage, according to a statement:

"These actions created an immediate danger of a land traffic disaster, endangering the lives and health of many people and property on a large scale."

Broken cables

The explosion occurred on the tracks of the railway between the capital Warsaw and the city of Lublin in the southeast, at a small viaduct. The explosion is believed to have occurred during the night to Sunday, when the damage was discovered when a train was about to pass on Sunday morning. It was near the town of Zyczyn, about ten kilometers from Warsaw. The train stopped and no one was injured.

"We can say without a doubt that an explosive device was detonated and damaged the railway tracks," said Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski.

Later on Sunday, a train on the same route was forced to stop after the overhead power lines were damaged. 60 meters of cable were reportedly damaged in another suspected sabotage. The broken cables reportedly shattered windows on the train, but none of the hundreds of passengers on board were injured.
