An explosion that occurred on a railway track in Poland this weekend was sabotage, according to the country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Tusk announced on social media that “the worst fears have come true” and that the sabotage was aimed at the security of the Polish state and its citizens. Tusk was on site at the tracks on Monday morning and in a video clip published from there, he says that the incident is being taken very seriously:

The explosion was most likely intended to blow up a train on the route between Warsaw and Deblin. This route also transports weapons to Ukraine, Tusk says in the video clip, according to reports in Polish media.

The explosion occurred on the tracks of the railway between the capital Warsaw and the southeastern city of Lublin. The blast is believed to have occurred during the night to Sunday, when the damage was discovered by a train driver who was due to pass on Sunday morning. It was near the town of Zyczyn, about ten kilometers from Warsaw.

Images from the scene show a small regional train standing still on top of a railway viaduct, with some debris all around. There were only two passengers on the train, in addition to the staff, and no one was reportedly injured.

"An investigation is underway. As in previous cases of this kind, we will catch the perpetrators, regardless of who gave them the assignment," Donald Tusk writes in a post.

Suspected sabotage damage is being investigated at at least one other location along the route, according to Polish authorities.
