It is largely even in the presidential election in Poland, according to exit polls. Both candidates – the national conservative Karol Nawrocki and Warsaw's liberal mayor Rafal Trzaskowski – have declared themselves winners.

Trzaskowski has a narrow lead, as he appears to receive 50.3 percent of the votes, according to an exit poll. The margin of error is, however, two percentage points.

According to another exit poll, the margin is even smaller between the candidates – there, Trzaskowski has a lead with 50.17 percent of the votes, according to Poland's state TV, TVP.

Despite this, both candidates have declared themselves victorious.

We won... by a hair's breadth, says Trzaskowski, and adds that "the president's first task will be to reach out to those who did not vote for me".

Nawrocki also believes in victory, and says that "we will win during the night".

A real result is expected on Monday. The voter turnout landed at 72.8, according to TVP.

Nawrocki went on together with Trzaskowski from the presidential election's even first round – the right-wing candidate received 29.5 percent, while liberal Trzaskowski received 31.4 percent.

Questions about Poland's role in the EU, as well as abortion and LGBTQI rights, have been central in the election.

I hope for less division, that it may become more dialogue, said 29-year-old Katarzyna Malek, who chose to vote for Rafal Trzaskowski, during the day to AP.

A victory for Trzaskowski is estimated to strongly benefit Prime Minister Donald Tusk's progressive government. Trzaskowski is generally seen as EU-friendly.

Received by Trump

If Nawrocki wins, it may strengthen the high-nationalist former ruling party Law and Justice (PIS). He has been received by President Donald Trump at the White House and has had an anti-Ukrainian rhetoric during his campaign.

I'm voting for Trzaskowski. He is well-educated, speaks many languages and is intelligent, said Agnieszka Lewinska, 56-year-old cleaner, previously to AFP.

Lila Chojecka, 60-year-old pensioner, said to the news agency that she intended to vote for Nawrocki.

Catholic values are important to me. I know that he shares them.

The country is primarily governed by the prime minister and the government. There, Poland changed direction in the 2023 election, when a left-leaning and EU-friendly coalition led by Tusk could take over, following eight years of harsh rule by the right-wing party PIS.

The president is elected in separate elections, and it is this that is now being decided.

The head of state has a certain influence over foreign policy and also a great opportunity to stop and block laws. This opportunity has been used by the current outgoing right-wing president, PIS-supported Andrzej Duda, to put obstacles in the way of the government.
