Pixar's animated film "Elio" premiered at the end of June.

The film follows an 11-year-old boy who aliens mistake for being the Earth's ambassador and Elio is sent to the Communiverse – an intergalactic organization – to represent the planet.

Before the film was completed, the film's main character was "queer-coded". After a number of test screenings with negative reactions from the audience and managers at Pixar, which is owned by Disney, the film company decided to remove scenes showing Elio's interest in a pink shirt, as well as another scene where pictures in his room suggest male infatuation.

The director Adrian Molina, who is openly homosexual, left the project and was replaced by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi. Even actors were replaced, and a number of people in the production were disappointed with the changes and also left their assignments.

"Elio" has sold fewer tickets during its opening weekend in the USA than Pixar's previous films.
