Colombia has previously accused the USA of violating the country's sovereignty in an American boat attack in September, which, according to President Gustavo Petro, killed an innocent fisherman in Colombian territorial waters.
The President of the USA, Donald Trump, has thereafter accused Petro of being a "drug leader" and of allowing drug activities in the country. On Monday, Colombia recalled its ambassador to the USA.
But on Tuesday, Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Petro had held a "long, straightforward and constructive" conversation with John McNamara, the USA's top diplomat in the country, and that the parties "confirmed their commitment to improve their strategies to combat drug trafficking".
The USA has carried out several attacks on boats in the Caribbean Sea over the past month, mainly off the coast of Venezuela, with the accusation of smuggling narcotics.
