An investigation into a suspected trafficking network has been launched, the Peruvian Attorney General's Office announced.
It comes after at least 13 Peruvians were killed in the war in Ukraine, according to a lawyer representing the victims' families. The lawyer says around 600 Peruvians have been lured to Russia since October.
They are believed to have been recruited to go to Russia via social media, with offers of well-paid jobs such as security guards. But once in the country, they have been forced to participate in the fighting between Russia and Ukraine, the justice minister's office said in a statement.
The Russian embassy in Lima confirms that Peruvians have joined the Russian military, but claims that it was voluntary.
