The Congress in Peru has voted to remove the heavily criticized President Dina Boluarte in an impeachment process. Congress leader José Jerí is taking over and will lead a transitional government.

An overwhelming majority of the 130 members of Congress voted to remove Boluarte, who has been criticized for the government's failed attempts to curb crime in the country – not least murder and extortion.

Shortly thereafter, the leader of the country's Congress, José Jerí, was sworn in as president.

Today, I humbly take over the presidency of the republic to install and lead a transitional government, he says to Parliament.

From January to mid-August this year, 6,041 people have been killed in the country, according to official statistics, which is the highest figure for the same period since 2017. At the same time, reports of extortion have increased by 28 percent from last year.

Criticism of the president accelerated on Wednesday, when a man opened fire and injured five people during a concert in Lima.

Late on Thursday, Congress voted to initiate an impeachment process against the president, and she was later called in to defend herself. However, Boluarte announced that she had no intention of appearing. Shortly thereafter, Congress voted to remove her.

Dina Boluarte was appointed President of Peru in December 2022 and thus became the first woman to hold the position. Her entire term has been marked by protests and various scandals, investigations, and increased gang violence. Several previous attempts have been made to remove her.
