The United States is moving forces from military bases in the Middle East, several news agencies report. The reports have raised questions about an imminent U.S. intervention in Iran.

Some personnel at the al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar have been asked to leave the base before the end of the day, a move confirmed by the Qatari government.

The call applies to several US bases in the region, according to a Reuters source described as a senior US official. The source told the news agency it was a precautionary measure amid increased tensions.

Al-Udeid is the largest US base in the Middle East, with around 10,000 troops. The air base in Qatar was attacked by Iran during the 12-day war against Israel in June, in response to US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Tehran responded on X, saying the US should remember the June attack, which the regime says proves “Iran’s willingness and capacity to respond to any attack,” Ali Shamkhani, head of Iran’s National Security Council and advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wrote.
