The 35-year-old had a tough start to the Tokyo World Championship when he after the finish line was rolled out in a wheelchair after 35 kilometers. On the second to last day of the championship, he finished in 13th place on 20 km - a placement that means he leaves Japan with a good feeling despite everything.
I'm fairly satisfied. I'm making myself fairly right and growing into the championship in my other distances, he says.
Karlström, who previously has, among other things, four World Championship medals, one silver and three bronze, also looks bright on the future.
This season started really well all the way to March, I don't think age is a problem with speed, injuries and so on.
Was this not your last major championship?
No, I have at least three left.
The 20 kilometer long race was won by the Brazilian Caio Bonfim after the home hope Toshikazu Yamanishi, who was on his way to gold, got his third warning and had to stand aside for two minutes. The Japanese finished in 28th place.
Finally, he was really bad. I saw him and it wasn't good, says Karlström and means that there were clear flaws in the technique.
It was well judged by the judges.
The Swede also had opinions about the winner Bonfim's performance.
He opens every championship more and more strangely, further and further back and just flies past us. Then, in some magical way, he's at the front.
We may not super like his technique, he's on the edge.
