Human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has been arrested in Iran, her supporters say.

Iranian security forces reportedly arrested her in a "violent" manner during a memorial service, her organization writes on X. Several other activists are also said to have been arrested.

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned about today's brutal arrest of Narges Mohammadi and a number of other activists," the committee, which awards the peace prize, wrote in a statement.

Supporters have warned for months that she is at risk of being re-imprisoned since she was granted a limited medical leave in December 2024. She has spent much of the last ten years in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran.

The 53-year-old was awarded the 2023 Peace Prize for her fight for women's and human rights in her home country. Mohammadi's two children and husband live in Paris and, according to her, she has been permanently banned from leaving Iran.

Iran has not commented on the information.
