A mechanical fault meant the balcony door was not locked, allowing the man to get out onto the balcony, the medical investigation shows, reports P4 Sörmland.
The door is supposed to lock automatically, but it did not. The incident has been reported to the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo), and the hospital is now considering, among other things, glazing the balconies.
“Currently, the staff go around and check all the doors because they want to make sure they are really locked,” says Birgitta Barkne Nilsson, division manager of medicine at Region Sörmland.
A police investigation into involuntary manslaughter is ongoing.
