All parties are concerned about the increasingly harsh political climate ahead of the election campaign. We are taking this with us now as we prepare for the election year, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party).

He held a meeting on Wednesday with all the parliamentary parties' party secretaries, as well as with the police and Säpo. The meeting was about security ahead of the election.

All eight parties testify to an experience of increased polarization and division, that the tone has been betrayed further, says Strömmer.

The party secretaries pointed, according to Strömmer, particularly to the vulnerability of local politicians who are not covered by the same security organization as ministers and members of parliament.

The Minister of Justice does not want to assess today whether the threat against politicians has worsened compared to the 2022 election. He is awaiting, among other things, a survey by the Crime Prevention Council in November on the safety of politicians.

Strömmer points out that there are different threats from violence-advocating extremists, terrorists, organized crime and influence campaigns from state actors.

More debates are also taking place today on issues that are very divisive in our society, such as the painful conflict in the Middle East, says Strömmer.

On the question of whether the security measures will now be more comprehensive than before the 2022 election, Strömmer replies:

It remains to be seen, but the authorities, just like the parties, assess that the situation is such that preparations need to begin very early and earlier than has been the case in previous elections.

Further meetings between all parties and the police will be held. The police will also meet each party individually to better understand each party's needs.
