When the scaffolding that was set up 20 years ago is now being taken down, it is the first time in about 200 years that the World Heritage can be seen completely without scaffolding, notes Greece's Minister of Culture Lisa Mendoni in the radio channel Skai.
But whoever wants to see the temple without it being obscured by scaffolding must hurry. In about a month, new scaffolding will be erected on the western side of the Parthenon, albeit of a type that is "lighter and aesthetically more similar to the monument”, according to Mendoni.
The maintenance will continue until the summer of 2026, but then the minister promises that the temple will be completely without scaffolding.
The Acropolis is Greece's most popular tourist destination by far, with 4.5 million visitors last year. The marble temple Parthenon was built in the 400th century before our calendar, as a tribute to the goddess Athena.
