Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino describes Friday's powerful earthquake in the country as a "major disaster" in a statement.
He says roads have been destroyed near the earthquake's epicenter, but it is not clear whether any deaths have been reported.
After the initial earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.7 and struck around 8 p.m. Swedish time, several powerful aftershocks were recorded. At least one had a magnitude of 6.0.
