Government will remove the malus tax (malusskatten)

The government, together with the Sweden Democrats, has decided to abolish the "malus tax" on motorhomes. The budget proposal will be presented on September 19th in the Parlament, and the tax will be removed from February 1st, 2025.

Per Nilsson, chairman of the Swedish Caravan and Motorhome Association, says

"We are very pleased that our elected politicians have listened to our arguments and understood that the tax is unfair and targets the wrong people."

Per Nilsson also believes that this will benefit the entire industry, including campsites, rural tourism, and the tourism sector.

The government and the Sweden Democrats believe that the vehicle tax has become unreasonably high for motorhome owners. The effect will be a reduction of around 5,000-6,000 SEK in taxes for motorhome owners. [1]

Motorhomes More Popular than Caravans

Fewer motorhomes and caravans (husvagnar) were registered in Sweden in 2023 compared to 2022. Increased living costs led to decreased sales. There were a total of 295,389 registered motorhomes and caravans in Sweden 2023, with 43% being caravans and 57% motorhomes. In all of Europe, there are 6 million registered motorhomes and caravans, with the largest number found in Germany, followed by France and England. SRC Swedish Camping Branch Report 2024
