There are very different concepts about what holidays are this weekend, as All Saints' Day clashes with Halloween. We investigate the days here.
At Halloween, some children dress up and go trick-or-treating, known in Swedish as "bus eller godis" (same meaning as trick or treat). For All Saints' Day, many people visit relatives' graves and light candles to remember them.
Families who observe both could visit a grave during the day on October 31 and arrange trick-or-treating with neighbours later. At the cemetery, children can help light a candle and remember the person who has died.
Sweden's All Saints' Day, Alla helgons dag, is a public holiday held on the Saturday between October 31 and November 6. Many people visit relatives' graves and light candles. Halloween, by contrast, is always on October 31 and is marked with costumes and sweets, particularly by children.
The Swedish calendar also calls November 1 Allhelgonadagen, or All Hallows' Day. Its eve, Allhelgonaafton, is October 31. This differs from Alla helgons afton, the Friday evening preceding Sweden's movable All Saints' Day, which falls on October 30 in 2026.
The Church of Sweden observes All Souls' Day, Alla själars dag, on the Sunday after All Saints' Day, November 1 in 2026. In Catholic tradition, All Souls' Day is observed on November 2.
No matter what you come up with, this weekend is a weekend with many activities where families and loved ones can gather for various autumn activities.
