More than 130 migrants were rescued by the Greek Coast Guard off the island of Crete on Saturday morning, police said.

The migrants, who were travelling in a fishing boat, were rescued just over 25 kilometres off Gavdos, a small island south of Crete. Their nationality has not been made public.

Over the past five days, a total of 840 people have been rescued from the sea, according to the police.

Many people trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Crete drown during the perilous journey. In early December, 17 people, mainly Sudanese and Egyptians, drowned when their boat sank off the coast of Crete. Only two people survived, while 15 are reported missing.

Over 16,770 people have arrived in Crete this year to try to reach Europe, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
