Government-backed militiamen from the group Zamfara Civilian Protection Guard (CPG) killed earlier in the week more than a hundred "bandits" in northwestern Nigeria, according to a local official.

Militiamen and gang members, locally referred to as just "bandits", ended up in a long and bloody exchange of fire after CPG stormed the stronghold of a notorious gang leader, Bello Turij.

A former gang member, who has now switched sides and instead works for the government, led the attack on Turij. His goal was to get Turij "dead or alive".

It is above all the gang's connection with jihadists from the northeastern parts of the country that worries the authorities and security analysts.
