At the end of December, the Ottawa Senators announced that Linus Ullmark was taking an indefinite break from hockey for personal reasons.
“Out of respect for Linus, we will not be making any further comments,” the Senators wrote at the time.
Ullmark, who was named the NHL's best goalie in 2023, is still out, and false rumors have spread on social media - something that prompted the club to react strongly in a statement on Friday night, local time in Sweden.
"Our organization is extremely disappointed to have to read the completely fabricated and false stories being spread on social media about our hockey club. Linus is away from the team for personal reasons and has the support of the entire organization. We asked people to respect his privacy, but apparently that plea has not been heeded by the lowest form of trolls and sick people on the internet. We are disgusted that outside forces are trying to disrupt our hockey club. This statement will put an end to the ridiculous speculation that has been spread online," writes Steve Staios, chairman of hockey operations and general manager of the club.
Linus Ullmark has had an up-and-down season and was not selected for Tre Kronor's squad for the Olympics in Milan in February.
