It is a rule change that makes many wonder why it was not already a requirement to watch all the films to be assessed. But that is not the case, and now the loophole is being closed, writes Variety.
The Academy has approximately 10,000 members who vote in different categories and who, from now on, will have to promise on their honor and conscience that they have seen the films they are to assess.
The new rules are being introduced to, among other things, counteract buddy voting and make the whole process more fair.
Academy members have access to a portal where the nominated films are available. Those who do not watch all the films there must certify that they have seen the remaining entries at a festival or similar event and where they did so – otherwise, they will not have access to the actual ballot for the Oscars.
The new rules come into effect at next year's Oscars gala, which takes place on March 15.
