The disqualifications were announced a couple of hours after the finish. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished in fifth place, and Alpine driver Pierre Gasly, who finished eleventh, were disqualified because their cars were too light at the weigh-in after the race.
Lewis Hamilton, also from Ferrari, was disqualified because a part of his car did not meet the regulations. The Englishman finished sixth and, like his teammate Leclerc, loses the World Championship points from Sunday's race.
Piastri's Revenge
It went much better for Oscar Piastri, who was close to a top spot in the Formula 1 premiere on home soil in Melbourne last weekend. But about ten laps from the finish, the Australian slid off the track in the rain chaos and had to retire.
This time, he stayed on the asphalt and was the first to cross the finish line. Piastri started from the first starting grid for the first time and, after fending off an attack from George Russell, Mercedes, at the start, was able to pull away to a comfortable victory, the third in his career.
I'm incredibly happy, the team did a great job this weekend, says Piastri in the victory interview on the track after the race.
Double McLaren
Behind Piastri, Lando Norris finished in second place, 9.7 seconds behind, and secured a double victory for the McLaren team. Norris won the first race of the year, which is a sign that the British team is dominating Formula 1 for the time being.
I hope so. It's been an incredible weekend here. The car has been incredible, says Piastri.
George Russell took the last spot on the podium, while Max Verstappen finished fourth in his Red Bull.
The disqualifications of the Ferrari drivers mean that Haas driver Esteban Ocon moves up to fifth place, and youngster Kimi Antonelli in Mercedes advances to sixth place.
In two weeks, the third World Championship race of the year will be held in Japan.
