Trump opened up to discussing the issue at a press conference ahead of the meeting.
"It's difficult for Hungary to get access to oil from anywhere else (other than via pipelines from Russia). They have no sea, no ports," Trump said.
Orbán added that during the meeting he would describe in more detail to the US president the consequences of an oil import ban for the Hungarian economy.
And the management seems to have been successful.
"The United States has granted Hungary a full and unlimited exemption from oil and gas sanctions. We are grateful for this decision, which guarantees Hungary's energy security," Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó wrote on X.
Divided view of Putin?
The leaders were also expected to discuss Russia's war in Ukraine and a possible new meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I am here to contribute to the president's efforts to broker peace," Orbán said before the meeting.
However, he avoided answering directly the question of whether the two of them can agree on how to put pressure on Putin.
"I have some ideas and I will present them to the president," Orbán said.
A previously planned meeting this fall between Trump and Putin was canceled a few weeks ago. If a new meeting takes place in the future, the plan is still for it to be held in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, Trump said.
Tributed to each other
Hungary is the Kremlin's closest ally among EU countries and Orbán has also cultivated close ties with Trump, who has described Hungary under the right-wing populist leader as a conservative pioneer.
They both described each other with warm words during the press conference.
Trump praised Orbán for Hungary's tough migration policies and said the rest of the EU should show him more respect.
Orbán accused Trump's predecessor Joe Biden of destroying the US-Hungary relationship established during Trump's first term, adding that it has now been restored.
