One Killed, 11 Injured in Attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport

At least one person was killed and 11 others were injured in Sunday's attack on King Khalid International Airport outside the Saudi capital, Riyadh, authorities said. “The events of recent weeks are serious. Our response must be equally serious,” Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said at a conference on Monday.

The airport has been hit by rocket attacks several times over the past week. On Saturday, at least twelve people were killed and more than 300 injured in what has been described as one of the deadliest attacks in the country in years.

In a new attack on Sunday, a Pakistani citizen was killed when a projectile hit one of the airport’s terminal buildings.

Later that day, attacks were also directed at another airport in the country, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. Saudi authorities said air defenses shot down several missiles and drones during the day.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen has repeatedly claimed responsibility for attacks in recent days and has threatened to continue targeting transportation hubs in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia leads a coalition that has provided military support to Yemen’s internationally recognized government since 2015, including efforts to take control of Yemeni airspace.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi advised his Saudi counterpart in a phone call to “continue to insist on a military approach” to avoid further escalation in the area, according to a statement on Telegram.
