A quarterfinal exit in yesterday's sprint was followed by a 38th-place finish in the 20-kilometer classic.
The 36-year-old, who was aiming for the Olympics, was never really in contention. He lost time from the start and had nothing to offer against a strong field. At the finish, he was more than two minutes behind winner Edvard Sandvik of Norway and was the sixth Swedish skier to finish.
Johan Häggström was the best Swede, finishing ninth, 48.3 seconds off the winner. Leo Johansson finished eleventh and Emil Danielsson twelfth.
Norway dominated the top positions. Only in eighth place in the results was a non-Norwegian skater.
To have a chance at an Olympic spot, Halfvarsson needed to perform in today's race to qualify for the World Cup and be able to fight for the final places.
