Over 20,000 Berliners were ordered to leave their homes after old bombs were found, among other things, in the Spree river in the middle of the German capital. After studying the piece under water, it was decided to leave it alone.

The police suspect that the Spree bomb is from World War II, reports Tagesspiegel. It was found during "a routine bomb disposal operation in the water".

A restricted area within a radius of 500 meters from the bomb was established. Around 10,000 inhabitants were evacuated, and divers examined the bomb more closely. But the conclusion was that it does not pose any danger, and it is therefore left there.

At the same time, quarters with a total of over 12,000 residents in the Spandau district were evacuated, reports the news agency APA. There, a 100 kilo heavy bomb from World War II was found. However, that charge must be defused, which would be done during the Friday afternoon.

Such alarms are not entirely unusual in Germany. As recently as June this year, over 20,000 people were evacuated in Cologne after three undetonated American bombs from World War II were found. And in 2017, a large bomb was found in Frankfurt. Then 65,000 people were evacuated, the largest evacuation in the country since World War II.
