Three Austrian nuns – aged 82, 86 and 88 – have escaped from a nursing home and returned to their former convent. They will be allowed to stay until further notice under certain conditions, the Catholic Church has announced.

The nuns' escape has made headlines around the world. The three were sent by the church against their will to a retirement home and the convent in Goldenstein Castle, near Salzburg, was closed again.

But in September, the trio escaped and broke into the convent with the help of their followers. According to the church, the three were placed in the nursing home for health reasons, and the nuns were accused of breaking their vows.

On Friday, the church announced that the three will be allowed to stay, if they agree to certain demands. The church promises to provide for the nuns' needs for care and medication, in exchange for them ceasing their social media activities and renouncing contact with their legal representatives. If their health deteriorates, they must move, according to the compromise proposal from the Catholic Church.

All three sisters have unanimously decided not to accept the proposal, the nuns' spokesperson told the APA news agency.

Since their return to the monastery, the nuns have invited their supporters there, and their daily lives are followed on social media.
