This after the church's central tower was lifted into place on top of the nave on Thursday.
Architect Antoni Gaudí's masterpiece now rises 162.91 meters above the city, the church announced in a statement. In doing so, it beats the spire of the German church Ulmer Münster, which is 161.53 meters high.
The Sagrada Familia will also become even taller when the "Tower of Jesus Christ" is fully completed in the coming months, rising 172 meters above Barcelona.
The church, which began construction in 1882, is due to be completed in 2026 – 100 years after Gaudí’s death – but construction has been delayed by world wars, a pandemic, funding shortages and disputes over how Gaudí’s drawings should be interpreted. And while the building itself is due to be completed next year, work on sculptures, decorations and the staircase to the main entrance is expected to continue until 2034.
The Sagrada Familia was visited by 4.9 million people last year.
