Biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken was found dead wearing a high-altitude mask. The Norwegian Olympic Committee is now advising against the use of that type of equipment.

A high-altitude mask is used to limit oxygen intake - a kind of artificial high-altitude training.

But after the sudden death of biathlon star Sivert Guttorm Bakken, Olympiatoppen, Norway's equivalent of the Swedish Olympic Committee, urges all active people to stop using that type of mask.

"Pending the investigation into Sivert Bakken's tragic death, Olympiatoppen has decided, and communicated to the athletes, that it advises against the use of artificial height to those athletes who may use it," reads a statement from Olympiatoppen.

Sivert Guttorm Bakken was found dead in his hotel room in Lavazè, Italy, on Tuesday. The 27-year-old made a comeback in the World Cup this season after having two entire seasons ruined by heart problems.

So-called artificial high-altitude training was long banned in Norway, but has been allowed for elite athletes since 2021.
