Ever since 2009, Icelander Thorir Hergeirsson has led the Norwegian women's handball team. Under his leadership, Norway has taken 17 championship medals, eleven of which are gold.
He has done so much for the Norwegian national team, I have such great respect for him, says Emilie Hovden to Viaplay.
It was a perfect ending.
Norway led the final in Vienna with 13–12 at halftime. But in the second half, they pulled away to a four-goal lead (16–12). Denmark never managed to recover.
In the end, the margin of victory was eight goals. Hovden says it was the defensive effort that led to the win.
They tried to play seven against six and we stopped it, says Hovden about the Danish attacking play when they took out the goalkeeper and played with seven outfield players.
Norway has now won three European Championships in a row and ten in total throughout history, after having been in 13 finals.
In the European Championship, they have been superior with straight wins. Denmark made it to the final after having lost only one match – against Norway in the group stage.
Hungary, one of the host countries, took the bronze after defeating the reigning World Championship and Olympic Games champions from France with 25–24.
