Norway Approves Consent Law Defining Non-Consensual Sex as Rape

Norway follows in Sweden's footsteps and introduces a consent law. A large majority in the parliament said yes to the proposal on Friday, which means that sex with a person who has not expressed their consent is rape.

This is a historic day, says Arbeiderpartiet's Ragnhild Male Hartviksen, who was the proposer for the question in the Storting.

The vote was supposed to be held already on Thursday, but it didn't happen.

The new law is welcomed by women's organizations.

“It's an important step for women's legal security and we hope the law will change attitudes, because the goal is not that Norwegian prisons should be filled with rapists – the goal is that no one should rape,” says Selma Flo-Munch from Norges Kvinnelobby in a comment to NTB.

In addition to Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland have also introduced similar consent laws in recent years.
