Northvolt is stopping production entirely on June 30. A bleak but expected message, according to the Swedish Association of Engineers – whose members to a high extent seem to have gotten new jobs.

The union does not have an exact figure on how many of the originally 650 members employed at Northvolt who have new jobs. This is because it is up to the members themselves to change their employment information in the union's database.

But the fact that so few have reported bad news is an indication, she notes.

It is probably quite a few who have moved on. We know that companies like Hitachi in Ludvika have absorbed many of our members.

Be prepared

For foreign nationals with work permits, the situation is more difficult since they have limited time to find new employment. But the picture of many having gotten new jobs applies to both Swedish and foreign nationals, according to the chief negotiator.

The reactions from members following Thursday's announcement have been limited. Many, notes Frankelius, were prepared for bad news.

The initial shock came naturally much earlier.

At IF Metall, with over 600 members among the remaining employees at Northvolt, one describes the announcement as sad, but relatively expected.

We are of course thinking of all our members who now receive a definitive message that they will not be returning to work, for the majority, after the end of May, says Lena Lundgren, coordinator at IF Metall in Skellefteå.

"Tougher"

The metalworkers at Northvolt have, says Lundgren, according to a rough estimate, consisted of one-third non-European, one-third European and one-third Swedish nationals.

The picture is unclear, but according to the coordinator, many members have had a harder time getting new jobs.

My estimate is that it is tougher for some of our members, despite the fact that many of them possess incredible competence and have post-secondary and even higher education, she says.

I know that some have moved back to their home countries. Others have moved on to other Nordic and European countries and gotten new jobs, but many are waiting and hoping for new opportunities.
