Minister of Unification Chung Dong-Young states that North Korea is estimated to have a stockpile of up to 2 tons of enriched uranium.
Initially, he referred to information from the intelligence services, but then changed to that the figure is an assessment made by experts.
It has long been known that North Korea has a "significant" amount of highly enriched uranium, according to South Korea's Ministry of Defense. The highly enriched uranium is a necessary material for manufacturing nuclear warheads.
Even at this moment, North Korea's uranium centrifuges are in operation at four locations, says Chung Dong-Young and adds that it would be sufficient to manufacture "an enormous number of nuclear weapons".
According to UN resolutions, North Korea is not allowed to launch ballistic missiles or conduct nuclear tests. Repeated violations of this have led to the country being subject to comprehensive sanctions.
