In 2024, Nordkalk received permission to mine just over 69 million tons of limestone for another thirty years. That decision was appealed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Urbergsgruppen, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, the Gotland County Administrative Board and Region Gotland.
The permit is now confirmed. The ruling also includes, among other things, an exemption from the prohibition in the Species Protection Ordinance concerning two butterfly species. The company is required to restore 21.6 hectares of land to provide functional habitats for the butterfly species.
The judgment can be further appealed to the Supreme Court.
