The future of Nordic combined in the Olympics has long been uncertain. The sport is the only Olympic discipline in which women have never been allowed to compete, something the IOC has justified by saying that there are too few female athletes.
It is now clear that the sport will disappear completely from the 2030 Winter Olympics. Nordic combined, which has been included since the very first Winter Games in 1924, is being removed from the Olympic programme, the IOC announces.
“We need to be honest about what works, and sometimes, more importantly, what doesn’t work,” said chairwoman Kristy Coventry in a statement.
Norway won all three gold medals at the recent Olympic competitions in Italy.
At the same time as Nordic combined is being scrapped, three new disciplines are being added to the 2030 programme. Freestyle skiing and snowboarding, as well as synchronized figure skating, are all being added to the Olympic family.
