“It is unprecedented and unacceptable,” Pillay said in a video address delivered at an event at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo on Saturday.

Just hours after human rights defender Pillay was awarded the prize, the US announced through Secretary of State Marco Rubio that it would impose new sanctions on the ICC to make the court’s work more difficult. Pillay, among other things, led a UN-commissioned investigation that concluded Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

International law expert Pillay has held several important positions during her international career, including serving as a judge at the ICC in The Hague from 2003 to 2008.
