The content of the 16th package is expected to be presented to EU countries' ambassadors in Brussels this afternoon. The idea is that they will then be able to agree in time for February 24, the anniversary of Russia's renewed attack on Ukraine in 2022.
According to the news site Politico Europe, the package includes, among other things, a ban on Russian aluminum and sanctions against an additional 74 vessels identified as part of the "shadow fleet" that helps Russia circumvent previous sanctions.
Even video games are now being drawn into the sanctions list.
We are really looking at all types of things that help Russia wage this war, even things like consoles for video games, since it's apparently what they use to control their drones, said EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas at a press conference following a Swedish-initiated breakfast meeting on Ukraine on Tuesday.
In parallel, the EU Commission presented proposals for heavy tariffs on a long list of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products and fertilizers on Tuesday evening – which, among others, Sweden has recently pushed for.
