Already on Christmas morning, an area with hard winds and heavy snowstorms is moving in over the northernmost Lapland mountains.
The combination is expected to bring difficult weather and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute advises against unnecessary trips to the mountains, as rescue efforts may be risky and time-consuming.
The reduced visibility makes it very difficult to orient oneself and it can be very hard to move around and set up tents. Furthermore, the risk of frostbite is great.
Even in the northern mountains, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute warns of similar weather on Christmas Day, and only experienced mountain hikers should venture out on a trip.
Further south in the country, it is instead the slippery roads that can cause problems on the weather front. In a large area from Sundsvall in the south to Övertorneå in the north, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute warns of sudden ice slicks. Motorists are therefore advised to drive cautiously and adjust their speed to the road conditions.
