The landslide in Niscemi, triggered by several days of heavy rain, has opened a four-kilometer front that is growing steadily. The crack has sent cars and parts of houses tumbling down the cliff edge, while other houses are now teetering on the edge of the abyss.
"The entire hill is collapsing," civil protection chief Fabio Ciciliano warned on Tuesday, according to La Repubblica.
Mayor Massimiliano Conti calls the situation “terrible.”
"We are scared. There is no point in trying to hide it," Conti tells the newspaper.
So far, around 1,500 residents have been evacuated.
The torrential rains behind the landslide have also caused devastation elsewhere in Sicily, as well as in Sardinia and Calabria on the mainland.
