Nigeria's former president Muhammadu Buhari has been buried at his home in the northwestern state of Katsina. Thousands of people gathered to pray in the city of Daura before Buhari was laid to rest.
Nigeria's president Bola Tinibu, Guinea-Bissau's president Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Niger's prime minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine were among the prominent guests. A massive security deployment, consisting of police and soldiers, monitored the otherwise so calm city.
Buhari ruled the country as a military leader in 1983–1985 before he became a "converted democrat", and took over after Goodluck Jonathan when he won the election in 2015. Buhari held the presidency for two terms, until 2023.
Buhari died at the age of 82 at a hospital in London on Sunday.
