Dan received 53.6 percent of the votes and far-right candidate Simion George received 46.4, according to the election authority's figures as reported by Romanian media.

The voter turnout is described as record-high in Romanian media, as nearly 65 percent of all eligible Romanian voters went out and voted in the presidential election's second round. In the first round, the turnout was around 53 percent.

Nicusor Dan is currently a non-partisan mayor of the capital city of Bucharest.

Romania actually held its presidential election last autumn – but the country's political landscape was turned upside down. Far-right candidate Calin Georgescu received the most votes in the first round, but the election was invalidated due to allegations of external influence, including via TikTok. Georgescu was not allowed to run in the new election.

George Simion clearly received the most votes in the first round on May 4, but opinion polls indicated even standings ahead of the second round. The nationalist has opposed continued support to neighboring country Ukraine. He has been described as Russia-friendly, which he himself has denied.
