The Masters at Augusta National is a competition with strong traditions, one of which is that former winners who have won the green jacket are always welcome back.
Therefore, Ángel Cabrera, 55, is teeing off in the major tournament this week. And not only that – Cabrera, who won the Masters in 2009, will also be attending Tuesday's "Champions Dinner" where last year's winner Scottie Scheffler sets the dinner menu.
I'm glad he's back with us this year, says Adam Scott, himself a winner in 2013 after beating Cabrera in a playoff, to ESPN.
However, Ángel Cabrera's return is not uncomplicated.
Starting in 2021, he spent more than two years in prison, convicted of assault, threats, and harassment of two women he had relationships with.
I'm remorseful and ashamed, the Argentine has said to Golf Digest.
They (the women) had the misfortune of crossing paths with me when I was at my worst. I wasn't the devil, but I did bad things.
Cabrera returns to Augusta as a fresh winner. On Sunday, he took his first-ever win on the PGA's Champions Tour, for players over 50 years old. He won the tournament in Boca Raton, Florida, with a two-stroke margin ahead of KJ Choi, South Korea.
The US Masters begins on Thursday, with last year's runner-up Ludvig Åberg as the only Swedish player in the starting field.
