We are starting to give the children these antibodies now already in September so that the children will have the protection when the RS season begins, says Andreas Odlind, chief physician at the children's clinic in Dalarna, to SVT News Dalarna.
The antibodies give the child protection for six months. Children who are at increased risk of becoming seriously ill may need an additional dose, ahead of their second RS virus season, according to 1177.se.
If the mother has been vaccinated against RS virus at the latest two weeks before delivery, the child does not need treatment.
RS virus is a common cause of respiratory infection in small children. For most, the infection is mild, but in infants it can lead to severe breathing difficulties.
It has previously been assessed that preventive medicine for all infants would be too expensive, but now new recommendations apply.
