Swedes' support for nuclear power remains stable at a historically high level, a new annual survey shows.

A little more than half (56 percent) responded in October to a Novus survey commissioned by the Analysis Group that they want to maintain and, if necessary, build new nuclear power plants in Sweden. This is unchanged compared to the previous year.

In 2018, just before public opinion for nuclear power began to turn around, only 30 percent wanted to keep existing reactors and build more.

A record low of 5 percent in the latest survey want to phase out nuclear power through political decisions.

The Analysis Group, which has been conducting the measurements since 1997, is funded by the nuclear power industry. Just over a thousand Swedes answered the question of whether Sweden should:

"dismantle nuclear power through political decisions?"

"continue to use the nuclear power plants that exist today, but not build any new reactors?"

"continue using nuclear power and, if necessary, build new reactors?"
