It is football's governing body Ifab that made a decision on the new rule to counteract time-wasting on Saturday. When three seconds have passed, the referees will visually count down the remaining five seconds, writes Ifab in a statement.
According to the current rules, an indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper holds the ball in their hands for longer than six seconds.
The governing body also announced after its annual congress that they support the plan from the International Football Federation (Fifa) for referees to wear body cameras – which will be part of the TV broadcast – during the Men's World Championship in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year.
