Chinese BYD – the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer by volume – sold a record number of passenger cars in August. So-called hybrid models are doing noticeably better than pure electric cars in BYD's range, according to the monthly figures.
Total sales of BYD's monthly sales in August increased to 370,854 passenger cars, a 30% increase in annual terms. The number of sold electric cars in August was 148,470, while hybrid cars increased to 222,384 cars.
So far this year, BYD has sold just over 2.3 million vehicles.
Most other electric vehicle manufacturers in China – such as Li Auto, Aito, Nio – reported a decline in August sales.
Geely's electric vehicle brand Zeekr, owned by Volvo Cars, which is about to launch an SUV model that will compete with Tesla, increased slightly compared to the previous month to 18,015 deliveries in August, but fewer than in June.
