Last year, the government commissioned the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning to investigate and develop models for building a villa without a building permit. The aim was to boost single-family home construction and make this type of housing accessible to more people.
On Thursday, Boverket's director-general, Anders Sjelvgren, submitted an interim report to the government with proposals for legislative changes. Among other things, it proposes an exemption from building permits for single-family homes no larger than 120 square meters and with a ridge height of no more than 5.5 meters, and a house model that must be approved in all municipalities.
Housing Minister Andreas Carlsson (KD) is signaling that these legal changes could come into effect as early as the second half of 2027.
