Unmarked mass graves containing the remains of a total of 56 people have been found in northern Mexico, not far from the border with the USA.
The prosecutor in the state of Chihuahua says in a statement that the graves were found earlier in the week and that the bodies were exhumed with the help of the military.
On Monday, the authorities in the state of Jalisco reported that a mass grave on the outskirts of the million-city Guadalajara, which was found in December, contained the remains of 24 people.
At the end of December, it was reported that two more graves had been found in the states of Chiapas and Chihuahua, containing a total of 43 bodies.
Since the Mexican government launched a war against the cartels in 2006, over 450,000 murders have been registered in the country. Additionally, tens of thousands of people have disappeared, according to official figures.
