Through breeding, blunt-nosed dogs have shorter skulls, which has led to narrow nostrils and narrow throats, making it difficult for the dogs to breathe.

The treatment uses a modified tetanus toxin that strengthens the muscles in the floor of the dog's mouth and helps keep the airway open.

In an initial study, six bulldogs with severe problems that made it difficult for them to walk for three minutes took part. After treatment, all showed improvement and were able to walk briskly, which had previously been difficult for them.

The study was published in The Veterinary Journal.
