Both players were suspended from MLB this summer, and Ortiz was arrested on Sunday. Teammate Clase has not yet been arrested, the prosecutor's office wrote in a statement.
“Luis Leandro Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase de la Cruz allegedly manipulated their pitches in professional baseball games so that an inner circle, and sometimes themselves, could reap profits,” says the FBI’s Christopher Raia.
The Cleveland players now face up to 65 years in prison for bribery and money laundering, among other charges.
"MLB contacted federal authorities at the beginning of the investigation and has cooperated fully throughout the process. We are aware of the indictment and today's arrest, and our investigation is ongoing," the league wrote in a statement.
At the end of October, basketball star Terry Rozier, among others, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a gambling ring with over 30 suspects.
